Julian Bell is a painter and writer living in Lewes, England. A 2012exhibition of his panoramic and narrative canvases in Brighton Museum & Art Gallery was described in The Guardian as deeply original and distinct from fashion. Bell's most recent solo exhibition was at Steven Harvey Fine Art Projects, New York (February 2013), and his next solo exhibition will be at St Anne's Galleries, Lewes, England (June 2015). His books includeBonnard(1994), What is Painting? Representation and Modern Art(1999), Mirror of the World: A New History of Art (2007), and the forthcoming Van Gogh: A Power Seething (2015). Bell's recent articles for the London Review of Books and New York Review of Books have ranged in topic from neuroaesthetics to Leonardo da Vinci and the cinema of Werner Herzog.In "The Art of Losing" - this title from an Elizabeth Bishop poem. Bell will reflect on coming to terms with the recent loss of decades of his unsoldpaintings and sketches in a studio fire. RSVP to dukegls@duke.edu
