Data Analytics in Business and Social Science (DABSS) Seminar

Organizations capture vast amounts of location data, including customer ZIP codes and the locations of facilities and suppliers. But often this location data is not put to productive use. In part, this is because it has historically been difficult and expensive to take advantage of location data; doing so has required specialized technical knowledge and specialized GIS tools that often integrate poorly with other systems and tools. But in recent years, this has changed. Today, thanks to the availability of geospatial analysis tools in R and the integration of R and other mapping and geospatial tools with mainstream business analytics software, organizations can derive value from location data more easily than before.Several basic location analytics tasks will be demonstrated using TIBCO Spotfire and R. These tasks will include geocoding; mapping; transformation of coordinate reference systems; spatial overlay; and calculation of geographical distance, area, and perimeter. More advanced geospatial analysis tasks will be briefly mentioned.Title:Geospatial data and the R ecosystemSpeaker:Colin Rundel, Duke R is a programming language designed for statistical computing and graphics with a rich ecosystem of user-created packages to extend its functionality. For this talk we will focus on the packages that enable R to read/write, manipulate, visualize, and analyze geospatial data.
