Doug Varone and Dancer; "Recomposed" at Durham Arts Center

The American Dance Festival and the Nasher Museum have co-commissioned ReComposed, a new work by Doug Varone and Dancers. In ReComposed, Varone creates a dance inspired by American abstract artist Joan Mitchell's pastel drawings with lighting design by Robert Wierzel. Mitchell used gestural, sometimes violent brush-work, and described her own paintings as an organism that turns in space. Varone's work hauntingly echoes Mitchell's explosions on canvas. In each of us is a storyteller, creating tales filled with the memories of our lives, says Varone of his solo, The Fabulist, commissioned by ADF and premiered to great acclaim in 2014. Additional work will round out the program. At the Nasher Museum, leading up to the performances, Varone will conduct classes that are open to the public. He will offer 'stripped' workshops that include sections of his dances performed by the company, discussions about the art of making dance and how visual arts play a role in it, and audience participation in the choreographic process. Tickets on sale May 11. More information and to purchase tickets. This event takes place at the Durham Performing Arts Center.
