Film Screening: US Premiere of "Swing con son" (Rafael Marziano Tinoco, 2009, 132 min, Venezuela / Dominican Republic, in Spanish w/ English subtitles, Color, 35mm)/ This documentary captures the stories of Caribbean people and their political and spiritual journey through the musical tale of Billo Frometa and the music that made him an icon throughout generations in Latin America. The film is then about the famous Venezuelan Salsa band "La Billos Caracas Boys," a tour de force on more than 60 of their music pieces. "Swing con son" is a documentary actually conceived as a musical, telling the story of Billo from his childhood in Dominican Republic, to his life in Venezuela, his chosen homeland after being forced to leave his country to escape General Trujillo, one of the most terrible dictators ever. / -- "Dominican merengue is played in major chords and not in minors: we decided our sadness to be expressed in majors." -- Crispín Fernandez / Trailer: https://youtu.be/u-FsnJnz0HQ // Co-sponsored by the Consortium in Latin American and Caribbean Studies at the University at UNC-CH and Duke University
