NC Latin American Film Festival

Film S, in Portuguese w/ English subtitles, Color, Digital)/ The film is a "cinensaio" (film-essay) based on an unfinished, posthumously published work called "O Santeiro do Mangue" by Brazilian modernist poet-novelist-journalist-political agitator Oswald de Andrade. It was described by the author as "um mistério gozoso em forma de ópera". "Santeiros" were street vendors who sold images of Catholic saints, the sacred heart of Jesus, sacred heart of Mary, etc, to the prostitutes of Rio's old red light district (1930s, 40s, 50s). The Film director describes "Do Mangue" as a film essay on prostitution, dance, philosophy, and Brazilian modernist poetry. / Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Dlcukg8Inw / About the filmmaker: Steve Berg is a filmmaker, film scholar, and free-lance translator, with very extensive connections and experience in the Brazilian art world, working on major projects on Brazilian contemporary art for MOMA.
