If I Have an Interest, Why Is It a Conflict?

12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
Ross E. McKinney, Jr., MD
Humanities in Medicine Lecture Series

Lunch provided at noon. Talk begins at 12:10pm. Financial conflicts of interest in research have drawn the attention of the press, the public, and the federal government in recent years. Legislation like the Physician Sunshine Act and the Open Payments database makes a public spectacle out of the financial relationships between physicians and industry. Is this strategy of public disclosure improving the quality of research? Is there data to support the choices that have been made in public policy? How should we evaluate the role of investigators' financial interests in the conduct of research? Ross McKinney, Jr., MD focuses his bioethics research on conflict of interest, the ethics of sports medicine, and the process of informed consent. He currently serves on the Board of the Association of Bioethics Program Directors.
