Yong Cai (UNC), Ralph Litzinger (Duke)

On October 29th, 2015, China announced the end of the one-child policy, the most extreme and controversial social experiment on population in human history. While the policy has undergone several relaxations since its initial announcement in the 1980s, the government has been reluctant to let it go -- until now.

Why has such a policy been retained for so long despite the widely acknowledged undesirable consequences? What were the social and economic impacts on China -- beyond the official government narrative -- and what are the implications, for women especially, going forward? How have the Chinese people reacted to this recently announced change? And lastly, is this move, in the words of several Western experts, simply "too little, too late"? Join us in a discussion with UNC Professor Yong Cai as we review the history of China¿s one-child policy, examine the social and political processes of policy change in China, and explore how history will judge this social experiment.
