The program for this concert includes Gavin Bryars: It Never Rains, for electric guitar, viola, cello, and double bass; Alex Burt's: >;) SXTG; David Kirkland Garner: Seized like a thief; Sid Richardson: LUNE, for violin and electronics, featuring guest violinist Lilit Hartunian; and Kenneth Stewart: The Dogma Loops (premiere of Ph.D. thesis). Gavin Bryars is an English composer of jazz and experimental music. It Never Rains (2010) was commissioned by Jim Fox for the California label Cold Blue Music. Alex Burtzos is is an American composer and conductor living in New York City. David Kirkland Garner earned his Ph.D. in composition at Duke in 2014. He has recently been appointed Assistant Professor of Composition at the University of South Carolina School of Music. Sid Richardson and Kenneth Stewart are both graduate composers at Duke. Sid Richardson directs [dnme], Duke New Music Ensemble. The Dogma Loops, presented on this program, is Ken Stewart's dissertation thesis for his Ph.D. in Composition. Violinist Lilit Hartunian performs at the forefront of contemporary music innovation in Boston and internationally. She serves on the violin and chamber music faculty at The Rivers School Conservatory.
