Sex Panic and the Expansion of the Carceral State
The Miller Sexual Psychopath Law, passed in Washington, DC in 1948, was part of a national wave of sexual psychopath laws that created the category of the "sexual offender" and vastly expanded the criminialization of non-normative sex. This talk explores the codification of the Miller Law and its aftermath to consider the role of sexual policing in the expansion of the carceral state and the challenges of an anti-carceral sexual politics.
