Crash Course in Performing Arts Criticism

Event Image
Friday, February 05, 2016
12:00 pm - 1:15 pm
Ariel Fielding, Brian Howe, David Graham, Grayson Currin

The entertainment industry depends on smart and knowledgeable critics, but as traditional opportunities for on-the-job learning diminish and audiences and news outlets change, it becomes necessary to find new ways of developing skills and passing along knowledge. This panel will examine the essential elements of arts criticism and the role of the critic, then zoom in on the specifics of writing about pop and international music, jazz, classical music, theater, and dance.

Featuring panelists David A. Graham (The Atlantic & formerly The Chronicle), Grayson Currin (Indy Week), Brian Howe (Indy Week) & Ariel Fielding (Duke Performances).

There is a short reading list for students interested in attending this panel (recommended but not required). Please email ariel.fielding@duke.edu for URLs to the four reviews that will be discussed.
