Promoting Global Health Access and Innovation at Research Universities

An important and critical topic in global health is the availability and access to innovative health technologies. As members of a large research institution that produces life-saving medical innovations, we have the power to promote access to medical technologies for people globally by changing norms and practices of university patenting and licensing, ensuring that university medical research meets the needs of the majority of the world's population, and empowering professors and students to respond to the access and innovation crisis. This talk will discuss the complex issues that underlie access to medicines and how we can address them through a multidisciplinary approach involving the fields of global health, law, economics, policy, and medicine.

Karishma Popli (left) is a Trinity Senior double majoring in Neuroscience and Global Health with a Certificate in Innovation and Entrepreneurship. She has served as co-president of the Duke Chapter of Universities Allied for Essential Medicines for the past three years.

Anthony Hung (right) is a Trinity Junior majoring in Biology and minoring in Global Health, as well as a co-president of Duke Universities Allied for Essential Medicines.
