Is Belief in God Reasonable? Aquinas on Philosophy, Faith, and Skepticism

Event Image
Thursday, April 07, 2016
6:30 pm - 7:30 pm
Dominic Legge, OP
Duke Catholic Center Lecture Series

Is saying "I believe" a leap in the dark? Is faith rational? Reasonable? What difference does it make that believers have minds endowed with reason? Can you argue someone into the faith? Out of it? Does God cause me to believe, or do I move myself to assent to the faith? The work and tradition of Thomas Aquinas have much to contribute to this rich discussion and to offer contemporary skeptics!

Dominic Legge entered the Order of Preachers in 2001 and was ordained a priest in 2007. He was raised in Seattle, Washington, and attended Claremont McKenna College as an undergraduate. Before becoming a Dominican, he attended Yale Law School and practiced law for several years as a trial attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice. He also holds a Ph.L. from the School of Philosophy of the Catholic University of America and an S.T.L. from the Pontifical Faculty of the Immaculate Conception. He has taught at the Catholic University of America Law School and at Providence College. He obtained a doctorate in Sacred Theology from the University of Fribourg in 2014 with a dissertation on the Trinitarian Christology of St. Thomas Aquinas.

Refreshments (BBQ chicken, fruit, cookies) will be served!
