Paul Armsworth, associate professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, will present a talk on "The Ecological Benefits and Economic Costs of Protected Areas" 3-4:30 p.m. Friday, September 9. Armsworth will discuss how protected areas provide a corner-stone in efforts to conserve biodiversity in the face of ongoing habitat loss and degradation. Using areas protected in the United States by The Nature Conservancy, a nonprofit land trust, as a case study, Armsworth will examine how considering costs and benefits of protected areas together changes recommendations regarding what locations should be priorities for protection and how protected areas should be designed. He will also outline ways that the science supporting conservation planning can become more relevant to the practice of land protection moving forward.
