Presentation: Continuous-Discontinuous Models of Fracture

Continuous-discontinuous models are a recent approach to simulate fracture that combine the best of two worlds. The initial stages of failure are described by a means of a continuum model, such as a damage model or a phase-field approach. Later on, cracks are explicitly represented by introducing discontinuities in the displacement field, via the extended finite element method (X-FEM) or related techniques. The explicit representation of cracks is needed in various scenarios (e.g. fluid pressure inside the crack).......
