This year we are pleased to convene a diverse group of three scholars who will present current projects that address the theme 'fracture/suture' in art history and visual culture. The theme's prominence within the fields of semiotics, psychoanalysis, and cinema studies offers a rich terrain that suggests wider applications. Our focus is the shards, slivers, and scars of art history and how they raise questions about subjectivity, identification, and narrative. In investigating how pieces fit together or are made to fit together, the theme offers an opportunity to reconsider the conventions of art historical process.
