Steam is the main heat source for buildings on campus. Steam is used for space conditioning, hot water heating, hospital medical equipment sterilization, dining services, pool heating, dishwashing and other process uses at Duke University. Like the chiller plant, it operates year round.

The first 15 minutes of the tour consists of a discussion about the hot/solar heating technology, and then the group will walk over to the steam plant. Hats and safety glasses are provided for the tour, however, close toed shoes are required. There will also be a safety discussion at the beginning of the tour.
