Transforming Cities Through Innovation

New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu will speak about his role in reinvigorating the Louisiana port city in a talk at Duke on Monday, Nov. 28.

The talk, "Transforming Cities Through Innovation," is a Terry Sanford Distinguished Lecture. It will begin at 5:30 p.m. in Fleishman Commons at the Sanford School of Public Policy, and will kick off the Sanford School's Innovator-in-Residence program. The talk will be followed by a reception. Both are free and open to the public.

Landrieu was voted "America's top turnaround mayor" in a survey of mayors compiled by POLITICO Magazine. Landrieu first took office in 2010. He is serving his second term as the elected leader of the city devastated by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and impacted by the BP oil rig explosion in 2010.

Landrieu will be interviewed by Sanford School Dean Kelly Brownell.

The Sanford Innovator-in-Residence program, supported by Duke benefactors Barbaralee Diamonstein-Spielvogel and Carl Spielvogel, seeks to develop and test novel solutions to public problems by engaging Duke students and faculty members in collaborations with practitioners outside the university. This team-based, applied and solution-oriented focus will attempt to solve real-world problems as students work alongside local government employees and leaders.
