In this seminar, participants will discuss the inter-relationship between Judaism, Christianity and Islam, with particular emphasis in Professor Nirenberg's recent review in Raritan on Shabab Ahmed's What is Islam? The Importance of Being Islamic. Participants should have read the review on Raritan and come prepared to discuss. Lunch will be served.

David Nirenberg has dedicated his career to studying how Jewish, Christian, and Islamic societies have interacted with and thought about each other, from their origins to the present. His books include: Communities of Violence: Persecution of Minorities in the Middle Ages (1996); Anti-Judaism: The Western Tradition (2013); Neighboring Faiths: Christianity, Islam, and Judaism Medieval and Modern (2014); and Aesthetic Theology and its Enemies: Judaism in Christian Painting, Poetry, and Politics (2015). Nirenberg is the Deborah R. and Edgar D. Jannotta Distinguished Service Professor of Social Thought and History, as well as Dean of the Division of the Social Sciences at the University of Chicago.
