Duke-Makerere BME Partnership: Providing meaningful opportunity while challenging our scholastic plasticity

Learn more about the Duke - Makere University (MUK) Biomedical Engineering Partnership from William Reichert (Biomedical Engineering), who established the program after spending the 2014 - 2015 academic year as a Fulbright Scholar at Makere University, Kampala, Uganda. The Duke - MUK partnership is based on mutual collaboration through simultaneous classes taken by students on both campuses.

Dr. Reichert received a Bachelor of Arts in biology and chemistry from Gustavus Adolphus College in 1975. He worked for a couple of years as respiratory therapy technician before returning to school to receive a MS and PhD in Macromolecular Science and Engineering from the University of Michigan in 1980 and 1982, respectively. He was an NIH National Research Service Award Postdoctoral Fellow, a Whitaker Foundation Fellow, and an NIH New Investigator Fellow at the University of Utah in the Department of Bioengineering. He joined the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Duke University in 1989, and is currently the Theo C. Pilkington Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Duke University. He has authored over 200 publications on biomedical materials and biomedical sensors that have been cited collectively over 8000 times.
