ECE Seminar: New Platforms for Integrated Solid State Quantum Devices

Event Image
Monday, February 13, 2017
12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
Margherita Mazzera, Ph.D., Research Fellow ICFO, The Institute of Photonic Sciences and the Barcelona Institute of Technology

The coherent interaction between photons and atoms lays the bases of quantum information science, whose purpose is to open new possibilities for the transmission and the processing of information. It is crucial, for example, for the realization of quantum networks, where photonic quantum memories are fundamental building blocks as they allow synchronizing the different stages of the quantum processes.
The seminar will introduce different quantum memory schemes based on rare earth doped crystal. It will present an experiment of quantum storage of heralded single photons, where effectively quantum correlations between telecom photons and a temporally multimode quantum memory were demonstrated, and the implementation of a source of photon pairs with controllable delay, i.e. a quantum light source with embedded quantum memory.
Finally, perspectives of integration will be discussed together with vision and plans to develop a new research line aimed at developing novel platforms for improved quantum devices for applications in on-chip quantum information protocols.
