U.S.-China Relations in the Age of Trump

Event Image
Thursday, February 23, 2017
7:30 pm - 10:30 pm

Signs are emerging that suggest that under the new Trump Administration, the norms and guiding principles that have characterized America's relationship with the People's Republic of China since the 1970s may be called into question. During previous tense moments in the bilateral relationship, adherence to the core principles has served as a source of continuity and stability over four decades. With new tensions rising over issues such as the status of Taiwan, the trade relationship between China and the US, and the apparent military buildup in the South China Sea, how will US-China relations fare over the next few years? What will be the ramifications if these principles no longer cement the relationship during both good and bad times?

Live from Duke Kunshan University, an expert panel from academia, journalism and business will discuss the potential trajectory of US-China relations. Share your comments and questions via teleconference. Some panelists include:

Ker Gibbs, Chairman, The American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham), Shanghai
Dan Guttman, Professor of Law & Environmental Policy, NYU Shanghai
Ted Plafker, Foreign Correspondent, The Economist, Beijing
Zhe Sun, Professor of International Studies; Director, Center for U.S.-China Relations, Tsinghua University, Beijing

Moderated at DKU by Dr. Denis Simon, Executive Vice Chancellor, Dr. Junjie Zhang, Director, Environmental Research Center, and Dr. Elise DeVido
