Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions and the University Program in Environmental Policy seminar series

Daniel C. Miller, assistant professor of natural resources and environmental sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, will present "Assessing the Long-Term Impacts of International Aid for Forests" on Friday, March 10, 10-11:30 a.m. in Environment Hall 2102.

International aid remains a critical resource for forest conservation and management in developing countries. The challenge for ensuring accountability for the effectiveness of those efforts is that their results may take years, even decades, to materialize. Miller will present the results of a review of scholarship on the impacts of forest-related interventions and highlight a new approach to address this challenge: use of predictive proxy indicators (PPIs). He will describe work to identify and validate PPIs-measures taken during implementation of an aid project that are designed to provide credible information on long-term impacts-based on review of World Bank's forestry portfolio. Miller will put the results, which suggest that PPIs could be a cost-effective monitoring tool, in the context of research on locally managed forest commons to draw out broad lessons for understanding long-term impacts in the forest sector.

This talk is part of the Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions and the University Program in Environmental Policy seminar series featuring leading experts discussing a variety of pressing environmentally focused topics.
