Duke UNICEF presents an interactive lecture regarding the current affairs of global child health and policy. We welcome two distinguished scholars in the fields of global health equity, ethics, and human rights.

Velásquez Nimatuj is a journalist, social anthropologist and international spokeswoman for the respect for indigenous cultures. A member of the K'iche Maya people in Guatemala, she earned a doctorate degree in social anthropology from the University of Texas at Austin. She has won numerous academic fellowships and awards for her journalism, She was a member of the Latin American Consulting Group of Indigenous Leaders for UNICEF and participates in the UN through the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. She also served as advisor on indigenous issues for the Latin American and Caribbean office of UN Women (2014-2015).

Kathryn Whetten is a Professor of Public Policy and Global Health with additional appointments in Community and Family Medicine and Nursing. She is the Director of the Center for Health Policy and Inequalities Research which is part of the Duke Global Health Institute. Whetten's research examines the health behaviors and outcomes of disadvantaged communities and individuals. She seeks to understand the interrelationships among individual and community psychosocial dynamics, health behaviors, health, provider characteristics and public policies.
