We study the exclusive charmonium and bottomonium production in diffractive deep inelastic scattering and ultra-peripheral heavy-ion collisions within the dipole picture. We employ heavy quarkonium light-front wavefunctions inspired by the light-front holographic QCD. The resulting cross sections are in reasonable agreement with existing experimental data at HERA, RHIC and LHC. We observe that the coherent production cross-section ratios of excited states to the ground state are not sensitive to the dipole model parameters. We also make predictions for the heavy quarkonium production at future Electron-Ion Collider. We show that the electron-ion collisions provide a unique opportunity for a quantitative study of the of heavy quarkonium structure. Our study could provide impetus for the imaging of three-dimensional structure of the nucleon at future Electron-Ion Collider.
