DESCRIPTION:Cassilhaus\nMarch 21 - April 23\nReception: April 14\, 2:00pm
\nArtist Talk: April 15\, 6:00pm\n\nOn view by appointment\, and RSVP re
quired for events. See details at https://shorturl.at/bDFG6\n\nMore of Ev
erything is an ongoing exploration of the artist's recently discovered bi
ological grandfather\, Harvey Karman. Harvey was a fierce advocate for wo
men's rights as well as an integral part of the underground abortion move
ment in 1960's Los Angeles. At the same time\, Harvey was introduced to d
octors at the forefront of the emerging fertility field where he gave wom
en\, such as the artist's grandmother\, the option of motherhood they wou
ld not have otherwise had. Through the process of unearthing Harveys pers
onal archive\, Natasha has come to know a version of her grandfather that
reveals a shared likeness just below the surface\, as images and words c
reated nearly 70 years apart are now brought together. In More of Everyth
ing\, three generations that never existed as one are presented here in t
hree parallel narratives that intersect to create an imaginative union.\n
~\n\nNatasha is a photographer and filmmaker from Pound Ridge\, NY. She r
eceived a BFA in Graphic Design and Photography from Belmont University i
n Nashville\, TN (2020) and she currently resides in Durham\, NC where sh
e is an MFA candidate in the Experimental and Documentary Arts program at
Duke University. Natasha is the 2024 Graduate Arts Fellow at the Kenan I
nstitute of Ethics\, a two time Duke University Dean's Research Award rec
ipient and the Spring 2023 Student Film Photo Award recipient for her ong
oing project\, More of Everything.

00pm\n \n\nRubenstein Arts Center Film Theater Screening\nMarch 24\, 2:00
pm\n\nSEEN is a two part MFA thesis which includes a short experimental e
ssay film and an exhibition. The film and exhibition are related in theme
but presented as two separate works. Both concern how still and moving i
mages can visualize displaced memories.\nThe film\, follows Han\, a photo
grapher\, discussing the reemerging "ghost" from his past with his lover
Ann. The "ghost"\, which can only be seen by Han\, is an indescribable ex
istence that always escape the camera lens. The discussion around it shif
ts between real-time conversations and monologues in both English and Chi
nese. Meanwhile\, the visuals change between still and moving images\, pa
st and present footages. With images unable to capture authenticity and l
anguage struggling to convey cultural identity\, the film\, as a result\,
becomes the incommunicability itself of the displaced memories.\nThe exh
ibition\, includes a series of photography works and a one-channel video.
It showcases fragments of urban recollections that one fails to place. T
hese fragments are discrete\, out-of-context and removed from geological\
, chronological\, and cultural frameworks. The still and motion images fu
nction in different manners of shaping our impressions to the urban lands
cape but both fail to connect us to the real memories. Eventually they li
nger as pieces in between the reality and fantasy\, past and present\, pl
aces and non-places.\n~\nTianming Zhou (Alaric) is a Chinese filmmaker an
d photographer currently based in the USA. His work focuses on mental hea
lth\, displaced memories\, and the Chinese diaspora. Alaric grew up in Ma
inland China and completed his bachelor's degree in Hong Kong\, where he
developed a passion for street photography and film studies. Before pursu
ing his MFA at Duke University\, he worked as a documentary editor and in
dependent filmmaker for fictional films. His MFA experiences convinced hi
m to further experiment with the boundary between fiction and non-fiction
\, frequently expressed through meta-films and docu-fictions. During this
period\, he also expanded his artistic practice into video art and expan
ded cinema installations.

nArtist Talk: April 13\, 2:00pm\n\nelemental addresses the transitioning
of the body in form and matter. After experiencing lifelong genetic illn
esses and a Category 5 hurricane that destroyed my family's home and busi
ness\, I searched to find peace\, acceptance\, beauty and connectedness i
n life\, death\, the forces of nature and the Cosmos. My work emerged fro
m trauma\, the recognition of reorientation and survival. I asked myself:
How do you cultivate a sense of belonging and re-association with nature
in the face of natural disaster and death? How do you go back to what is
primordial\, the elements and forces that create and destroy everything
in the Cosmos? How do you move past your physical body and accept yoursel
f as a being in transition? I believe all is not destroyed by nature but
continually enveloped and recreated by it.\n\nThe exhibition consists of
large-scale archival pigment prints and an experimental film. The work de
picts the Five Platonic Solids in their elemental form: Water\, Earth\, A
ir\, Fire and Ether. Still images and video were purposefully composed an
d manually shot in camera utilizing only water\, plants\, sand and light.
No filters were applied to the still images in post-production.\n\nOur c
onnective tissue is the glue that holds our bodies together much like the
Cosmic Web is the scaffolding of the Cosmos. Seeing the relationship bet
ween our bodies and the Cosmos has been a healing force in my life.

DESCRIPTION:Rubenstein Arts Center Painting Studio\nOn View: March 22 - Ap
ril 14\n\nI don't know why I make art\, or whether what I do even qualifi
es as art. Trying to figure out or articulate an intention gets in the wa
y of living life. I'm suspicious of the notion that I can be consciously
aware of what drives my actions. It seems to me that human behavior is pr
edominantly driven by unconscious impulses arising from genetics\, sense
impressions\, and memory. The purpose of my activities is beyond my under
standing as a mortal\, and any narratives I invent to make sense of my en
deavors are speculative interpretations based on what seems significant t
o me under various circumstances. Such a protean attitude is beyond the r
ange of observability and control unless omniscience and omnipotence are
attained. I could concoct a number of contradictory stories about the rol
e I envision my art playing in society\, some of which strongly resonate
with me at times\, but I cannot offer one that's definitive. Every passin
g fraction of a second has the potential for an event to induce electroch
emical changes in my brain and nervous system that open new ways I could
relate to my work\, my identity\, and the world. Life seems like an absur
d string of events that are only connected as much as I retrospectively i
magine them to be. Asking me about my art is like asking a grape about it
s wine.

DESCRIPTION:Ruby Gallery\nRubenstein Arts Center 235\nOn View: March 22 -
April 14\nArtist Talk: April 10\, 6:00pm\n\nBetween Memories and Dreams
is an ongoing exploration that intricately delves into the space where i
dentity is lost and reclaimed. The exhibition unfolds through storytellin
g forms\, including childhood folk songs\, muted conversations\, and drea
m-like sequences. Alghesheyan explores childhood memories through a gener
ational lens\, contemplating memory\, dreams\, and identity\, and their e
volving intersections. The intersections uncover a shared belief in the t
ransformative potential of montage\, an art that not only narrates storie
s but shapes and reshapes the fabric of culture\, identity\, and space.\n
~\nWhile pursuing her BA in Media and Film at USF in San Francisco\, Sara
's exposure to experimental film and film archives ignited a transformati
ve phase in her art. Her works explore themes of voice\, memory\, narrati

DESCRIPTION:We have remarkable AIs and precise robots\, but why do humans
still do so much tedious physical work\, from factories to households? Th
e core missing piece is dexterity - the ability to manipulate objects ski
llfully. Human-level dexterity is the complex synergy of mind and body\,
from the lowest level of sensorimotor control to the highest level of cog
nitive thinking. Dexterity is the crucial intelligence of task solving an
d execution. Achieving robot dexterity will transform industries and peop
le's lives by empowering robots to perform complex manual processes seaml
essly in factories\, households\, service industries\, space operations\,
etc.\nIn this talk\, I will provide new perspectives on this complex pro
blem based on my research. Why is dexterity so complex? We will broaden o
ur understanding by studying three questions. First\, what kinds of robot
s are made for dexterity? Second\, what do complex dexterous manipulation
interactions involve? Third\, what skills will robots need to achieve de
xterity? Finally\, we will discuss the path toward general dexterity in r
obots

DESCRIPTION:On Good Friday\, we focus on the Passion of Christ as we remem
ber that God's love will not allow the evil that we do to one another and
our world to go unaddressed. We mark the agony of sin and the evil accum
ulated through the many ages of the world\, all taken on by Jesus for us
and for our salvation. Yet the Good Friday liturgy is not oriented around
sin\, evil\, shame\, or misery\, but around the grateful hope of the red
eemed.

DESCRIPTION:With intricate ridge and valley networks\, natural landscapes
shaped by fluvial erosion often exhibit universal scaling laws and self-s
imilar behavior. These properties are also displayed by the solutions of
landscape evolution modes (LEMs)\, when fluvial erosion dominates over th
e smoothing tendency of diffusion (i.e.\, soil creep). Under such conditi
ons\, an invariant self-similar regime is reached where the average lands
cape properties become independent of the balance between fluvial erosion
and soil diffusion. In the vanishing limit\, diffusion remains crucial a
nd localized in valleys and ridges where abrupt slope changes occur (as s
hock waves). \nWE illustrate how focusing on the essential elements that
distinguish landscape evolution\, minimalist LEMs become amenable to dime
nsional analysis and other methods of nonlinear field equations\, used fo
r example in fluid mechanics and turbulence\, offering fertile ground to
unveil distinct dynamic regimes (e.g.\, unchannelized\, from incipient va
lley formation\, transitional and statistically self-similar fractal regi
me)\, and properly formulate questions related to the existence of steady
state solution (as opposed to a situation of space time chaos\, similar
to a geomorphological turbulence). We also explore the parallelism betwee
n the landscape self-similarity and the self-similarity of fully develope
d turbulent flows and discuss challenges for evaluating numerical simulat
ion and novel avenues for numerical methods\, as well as ways to bridge b
etween spatially discrete models (i.e.\, river networks) and continuous\,
partial-differential-equation models.\n\nPorporato\, A. (2022). Hydrolog

DESCRIPTION:March 29th at noon (lunch to follow)\n"Glissant's Medusa: Sove
reign Cosmopoiesis and Unworldly Abjection"\nBlue Parlor\, East Campus\,
Duke University \n \nBuilding on Rizvana Bradley's suggestion that the c
ritical humanities has undertaken a "turn to the world\," this talk argue
s that this turn is enabled by an idealization of the concept of worlding
that disavows the desire for sovereignty that structures the process of
world-constitution\, however piously or altruistically the latter may be
construed. To make this case\, the talk will provide a rhetorical reading
of Glissant's "La barque ouverte" to show how Glissant's poetics of worl
ding otherwise generates the semblance of a "New World" of relationality
and non-totalitarian unity-in-diversity by obfuscating the structural rol
e that the production and appropriation of racialized/sexed abjection pla
ys within cosmopoiesis.\n \nThe seminar has one\, very short\, suggested
pre-read: Éduoard Glissant's "La barque ouverte" or "The Open Boat" from
Poetique de la Relation/Poetics of Relation. The French and English can
be found here: https://duke.box.com/s/ctxni70p13qb2bkyxwc0ouw2vaw1a2w0. \

DESCRIPTION:Come join us for Community Work Day at the Duke Campus Farm! W
ork in the field alongside our student crew and experience profound commu
nity with plants\, soil\, and humans. Absolutely no farming experience is
necessary\, and there is no Duke affiliation required. We have tasks for
most ages and abilities and volunteers will receive produce at the end o
f the work day.\n\nSigning up in advance helps our crew gauge what tasks
we should plan for\; however\, no one will be turned away at the gate.\n\
nIf you are coming to Community Workday with a group larger than 5\, plea
se email dukecampusfarm@duke.edu at least 48 hours in advance so that we
can provide the right kind of support for your group.

DESCRIPTION:This colloquium will feature a panel of Latin Americanists who
will discuss how the discourse of irrationalism in the mid-20th century
gave rise to a variety of transhistorical notions of community\, complica
ting in unexpected ways the engaged-autonomous dichotomy through which mo
dernist literature is often viewed\, since the political disillusion of t
hese nostalgic poets did not dull their double-edged concern for the peop
le as a political category or for community as a utopian ideal.

DESCRIPTION:I will review the concept of Floquet quantum error-correcting
codes\, and more generally\, dynamic codes. These codes are defined throu
gh sequences of low-weight measurements that "evolve" the instantaneous c
ode in time. I will explain how varying the measurement pattern can lead
to the implementation of logical gates. Thus\, in dynamic codes\, the low
-weight measurements varying in time can be used to generate the code\, i
mplement logical gates\, and detect errors. Time permitting\, I will also
discuss preliminary results on completing the universal gate set in pure
ly two dimensions in copies of toric/surface code\, which involves transi
ent fault-tolerant switching to a non-abelian quantum double model.\n\nMa
rgarita is currently a graduate student at MIT advised by Liang Fu\, and
will join Caltech as a Walter Burke postdoctoral fellow in fall 2023. She
works in both condensed matter theory and quantum information. Within qu
antum information\, her interests include dynamic quantum error correctio
n and physics-inspired approaches to quantum computation with qLDPC codes
\, as well as applications of quantum information tools to quantum many-b
ody systems.

DESCRIPTION:Inverse scattering aims to infer information about a hidden ob
ject by using the received scattered waves and training data collected fr
om forward mathematical models. Recent advances in computing have led to
increasing attention towards functional inverse inference\, which can rev
eal more detailed properties of a hidden object. However\, rigorous studi
es on functional inverse\, including the reconstruction of the functional
input and quantification of uncertainty\, remain scarce. Motivated by an
inverse scattering problem where the objective is to infer the functiona
l input representing the refractive index of a bounded scatterer\, a new
Bayesian framework will be discussed in the first part of this talk. It c
ontains a surrogate model that takes into account the functional inputs d
irectly through kernel functions\, and a Bayesian procedure that infers f
unctional inputs through the posterior distribution. In the second part o
f this talk\, we will introduce a novel procedure that\, given sparse dat
a generated from a stationary deterministic nonlinear dynamical system\,
can characterize specific local and/or global dynamic behavior with rigor
ous probability guarantees. More precisely\, the sparse data is used to c
onstruct a statistical surrogate model based on a Gaussian process (GP).
The dynamics of the surrogate model is interrogated using combinatorial
methods and characterized using algebraic topological invariants (Conley
index). The GP predictive distribution provides a lower bound on the conf
idence that these topological invariants\, and hence the characterized dy
namics\, apply to the unknown dynamical system.

DESCRIPTION:Learn how to throw pottery on the wheel! In this introductory
class\, you will learn the basics of centering and throwing cylinders. Th
is class is focused gaining an introduction into throwing techniques rath
er than creating a finished product and is a prerequisite to using the Ar
ts Annex pottery wheels during open studio hours. This is a Zero-Waste Du
keCreate class. Students will practice on the wheel and their clay will b
e recycled for the next class. Clay may be recycled indefinitely before i
t has been fired. Once clay is fired it lasts virtually forever and will
not breakdown. DukeCreate supports ethical and sustainable artistic pract
ices and therefore will not be firing work produced during this class.\nA
fter completing DukeCreate Introduction to Wheel Throwing\, students may
work in the Arts Annex clay studio during open studio hours or come to Du
keCreate Intermediate Wheel Throwing to complete a work to fire and keep.
\nPLEASE NOTE: This will be a 3-hour workshop beginning at 5:30PM. Space
is limited to only 12 participants. Please only enroll if you are sure yo
u can attend. If you must cancel\, please do so well in advance so anothe
r person can take your place. We anticipate the waitlist for this worksho
p will exceed 100 people.

DESCRIPTION:Parking is available on the Duke East Campus after 5 p.m. Emil
y Taylor (Duke Romance Studies) will lead a Maya K'iche language table in
the venue's lobby. \n\nRicardo Flores Carrasco (Lima\, Perú)\, known pr
ofessionally as Liberato Kani\, is a Quechua-language hip-hop singer and
songwriter. Through his work\, he is also a cultural and Indigenous Langu
ages activist. In 2016\, he presented his first album\, Rimay Pueblo\, wh
ich was internationally acclaimed\, although it also faced criticism due
to the fusion of traditional Andean sounds with contemporary urban rhythm
s. He performed at major arenas in Peru\, including Teatro Nacional\, Lim
a Book Fair\, and Afuera Fest. In 2018\, he made an international tour ca
lled Pawaspay (taking off in Quechua)\, where he visited Chile\, Spain\,
Cuba\, and the United States. \n\nOpening the concert will be Mario "Kam
ikal" Yaxon Guarcax. He grew up in Chimaltenango\, Guatemala\, where he f
ormed a rap group with his older brother. The pair have become known for
their lyrics that speak to themes of social justice lyrics in their indig
enous language\, Maya Kaqchikel. Mario came to the United States 6 years
ago\, fleeing death threats from former paramilitary soldiers in his comm
unity who disapprove of the brother's counter-culture music and social ju
stice activism. Now in North Carolina\, Mario works in roofing by day and
writes lyrics and mixes beats by night. \n\nWith the additional partici
