DESCRIPTION:The Nicholas School of the Environment invites you to a screen
ing of a movie about North Atlantic right whales - one of the most critic
ally endangered whales on the planet. North Atlantic right whales are dyi
ng faster than they can reproduce. With around 330 remaining\, these grea
t whales rarely die of natural causes. Instead\, they are run over by shi
ps or suffer lethal injuries from fishing gear. If we don't stop killing
them\, in 20 years they could be functionally extinct. With unprecedented
access to film the whale migration from the only known calving grounds t
o the shifting feeding grounds\, Last of the Right Whales follows the rig
ht whale migration and the people committed to saving a species still str
uggling to recover from centuries of hunting. Now climate change is forci
ng these great whales further north in search of food\, putting them on a
collision course with deadly ships and fishing gear. Featuring breathtak
ing footage of the majestic but rarely seen North Atlantic right whale -
as observed through the eyes of scientists\, photographers\, rescuers\, a
nd fishermen - we bear witness to their struggle and bring hope for their
survival.

DESCRIPTION:The Duke Environmental Law and Policy Forum's 2022 Symposium i
s in recognition of the 50th anniversary of the Clean Water Act (CWA). Th
e Act remains integral to preserving water quality for human health and r
ecreation\, and for the health and productivity of aquatic ecosystems int
imately tied to our communities. Three multi-disciplinary panels of leade
rs from private\, public\, and non-profit sectors will discuss the value
of clean water\, how far the CWA's protections extend\, and how the 50-ye
ar-old statute addresses emerging issues. The symposium will advance expe
rt discussions on the CWA while still engaging all community members in o
ur collective interest in clean water. Sponsored by the Duke Environmenta

DESCRIPTION:Understanding tradeoffs of rapid adaptation to environmental c
hemicals following chronic exposure is critical for ecological risk asses
sment. Atlantic killifish that reside in the Elizabeth River (ER)\, an es
tuary with significant PAH contamination from decades of creosote polluti
on\, provide a model to study these energetic costs. These fish exhibit a
PAH-adapted phenotype that has been associated with organismal-level bio
energetic shifts\, including decreased aerobic scope and reduced thermal
tolerance. We seek to understand the bioenergetic fitness of offspring fr
om sites with a gradient of PAH pollution and the later-life mitochondria
l effects of early life PAH exposure. These data provide important risk a
ssessment data for Atlantic killifish\, an integral species in the ER eco
system.\n\nThis seminar will be held in Field Auditorium (room 1112)\, Gr

DESCRIPTION:Human activity has profoundly influenced the environment on a
global scale. As a result of sustaining our planet's growing population\,
we have increased our use of synthetic chemicals and organic contaminant
s. Due to emerging contaminants like pharmaceuticals\, personal care prod
ucts\, and microplastics\, aquatic systems are hot spots for pollution. T
he continued release of these contaminants has resulted in an alteration
to biodiversity and ecosystem processes and functions. As urbanization ex
tends into previously unimpacted areas\, it is necessary to better unders
tand the ecological consequences of emerging contaminants. Topics my rese
arch has focused on span from assessing the acute toxicity of eco-friendl
y or "green" personal products before and after degradation\, microplasti
c contamination in inland and coastal waters\, comparative assessment of
microplastic impact on marine and freshwater organisms\, and the presence
/impact of antibiotics on environmental health. Although research centere
d around ecotox has been historically categorized or referenced by fundin
g agencies as "applied research" instead of basic science. Institutions m
ust recognize universally that contaminants act as agents of global chang
e\, impacting multiple parts of the biosphere.\n\nThis seminar will be he

DESCRIPTION:Although biodiversity conservation and development are often r
egarded as having a trade-off relationship\, there are regions where they
have co-benefits\, where conservation through expanding protection and r
educing deforestation can not only benefit biodiversity but also reduce c
limate change's impacts on human society\, including health risks. Dr. Bi
nbin Li will introduce her work on how the high overlap between areas wit
h biodiversity challenges\, those experiencing increasing natural disaste
rs under climate change\, and those with high spill-over risks of zoonosi
s diseases indicate a more sustainable path of development for these regi
ons. This is the key to implementing a post-2020 global biodiversity fram
ework and mainstreaming biodiversity conservation.\n\nChina is one of the
most biodiverse countries and faces great challenges in balancing biodiv
ersity conservation and development. Dr. Li will introduce how recent env
ironmental policies have developed in China to protect biodiversity and t
heir consequences for local livelihoods and endangered species conservati
on. An interdisciplinary approach has been used to promote sustainable li
velihoods around protected areas to reduce human disturbances\, such as l
ivestock grazing\, while engaging local communities in conservation throu
gh incentives.\n\nLearn more about the event and read Dr. Li's bio at bit

DESCRIPTION:In this presentation\, Dr. Frannie Nilsen will give an overvie
w of the field of environmental toxicology's distillation process for env
ironmental regulation and protection. She will include some of the projec
ts that she is involved with that were either designed to support regulat
ory development or are part of the enforcement of environmental regulatio
ns.\n\nAbout the speaker: Dr.Frannie Nilsen is the lead Environmental Tox
icologist at the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality with
experience in a wide range of environmental disciplines and a passion for
environmental stewardship. Frannie started her career in toxicology with
NOAA's marine mammal response program across the Hawaiian Islands. Her M
aster's Degree involved researching the effects of plastic pollution on e
ndangered seabirds in the North Pacific Ocean. Her doctoral work took her
to South Carolina where she investigated the sublethal effects of mercur
y exposure on alligators at the National Institute of Standard and Techno
logy Hollings Marine Lab and the Medicinal University of South Carolina.
When she came to North Carolina\, she joined the EPA to combine environme
ntal exposures and genetic predisposition to determine children's health
outcomes. Today she uses all these experiences to communicate environment
al issues to policy makers and protect North Carolina. \nThis seminar wi
ll be held in Field Auditorium (room 1112)\, Grainger Hall.\nVisit the se

DESCRIPTION:For this seminar\, Dr. Jason Arnold will discuss existing and
emerging tools within microbiome research\, a few research stories using
those tools\, and how to access this type of work at Duke.\n\nAbout the S
peaker: In 2015\, Dr. Arnold completed his PhD at State University of New
York at Buffalo (SUNY-Buffalo)\, studying polymicrobial interactions and
predator-prey interactions as drivers of the evolution of bacteriophage-
encoded exotoxins in bacterial pathogens (Shiga Toxin-encoding E. coli\,
Diphtheria\, etc.). Upon completing PhD research\, he began a postdoctora
l fellowship at University of North Carolina Chapel Hill\, studying the i
mpacts of aging on gut microbiota composition and host intestinal physiol
ogy. Dr. Arnold transitioned from postdoctoral research in 2019 to take a
position as technical director of UNC's Microbiome Core Facility\, where
he was involved in developing novel techniques to answer challenging-to-
answer questions within the microbiome space. During this time\, he also
pursued research focused on studying mechanisms for modulation of host ph
ysiology through microbial/microbiota-targeting interventions. In Novembe
r 2022\, Dr. Arnold joined Duke Faculty as Assistant Professor in the Dep
artment of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology\, and as Assistant Directo
r of the Duke Microbiome Center. His primary goals in this position withi
n the Duke Microbiome Center are to help facilitate and advance microbiom
e research across Duke campus through collaboration\, education\, and pro
tocol development.\n\nThis seminar will be held in Field Auditorium (room
1112)\, Grainger Hall.\nVisit the seminar website for a livestream link
to tune in virtually.\nBoth attendance options are free and open to all!

DESCRIPTION:The Middle East is a global hot spot for climate change and en
vironmental stress on water\, energy\, agriculture\, health and other ess
ential necessities. Many cities in our region are predicted to become uni
nhabitable by the end of the century. In recognition of this pressing rea
lity\, the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies and its Palestinian
partners conduct regional environmental diplomatic activities\, academic
research\, and initiate and execute projects throughout the Middle East.\
n\nThe need to equip national and regional policy makers\, diplomats\, co
mmunity leaders\, security experts\, and health officials with the tools
to deal with the growing risks of climate change is urgent. At present\,
no bi-lateral or regional effort combines scientific understanding of cli
mate change with political\, economic\, and strategic analysis of nationa
l and regional effects to give policy-makers actionable insights and to g
ive businesses sustainable opportunities to combat this challenge\, all w
hile addressing the political realities and levels of mistrust among part
ies.\n\nIn this talk\, advancing climate justice and resilience in confli
ct zones and examples of trans-boundary environmental projects\, such as
water production\, wastewater treatment\, solar energy applications and w
ater-energy-food nexus projects will be presented.\n\n\nSPEAKER: Dr. Tare
q Abu Hamed\, executive director of the Arava Institute for Environmental
Studies\, which was established to advance cross-border environmental co
operation in the face of political conflict\, and the highest-ranking Pal
estinian in the Israeli government from 2013 to 2016\n\nTakeaway box lunc
