A writer\, poet\, edi tor\, teacher and activist Hatuka has published the poetry books "East Mo on"\, "Island" and "Land". He is one of the founders of the Amram Associa tion\, which aims to further Mizrahi culture and has taken on the issue o f the "Yemenite babies" - hundreds of healthy babies community members be lieve were stolen from new immigrants in the early years of the State of Israel and given to Ashkenazi families for adoption. Hatuka also present s the radio show "Word Alliance" ("Brit Milah") - conversations with poet s - for the Public Broadcasting Corporation.\n\nMerhav Yeshoron is a poet and scholar. He obtained his M.A. and Ph.D in literature from Tel Aviv University and Bar Ilan University. His research integrates Hebrew liter ature and Jewish Philosophy\, exploring intertextuality within the Hebrew tradition. He is interested in how modern Hebrew poetics resonate with a ncient myths and traditions. His dissertation portrayed the modern Hebrew writer S.Y. Agnon as an author who perceived his own writing as an act o f Tikkun. His research is based on the linguistic investigations found in Maimonides' "Guide of the Perplexed\," where a group of names is identif ied as central metaphors used in the Bible to describe God and demonstrat es how these same names continue to dominate the metaphors that shape the metaphysics of modern Hebrew. One important Abhidharma tradition of Buddhism\, however\, maintains that there are real entities-fundamental trope-like entities c alled dharmas-that serve as the ontological foundation of ordinary concre te objects and mental states. To motivate the Madhyamaka global anti-real ist position\, the 2nd century philosopher Nāgārjuna argues that Abhidhar ma realism is inconsistent. He argues that the Buddhist doctrine of depen dent origination-the view that all phenomena in time occur on the basis o f conditions-is inconsistent with the Abhidharma view that some entities are fundamental and hence ultimately real. If all entities are dependentl y originated\, Nāgārjuna argues\, then they cannot be ultimately real. Ho wever\, the Abhidharma view that is presented as the target of Madhyamaka criticism in these arguments does not reflect the actual views of Vaibhā ṣika tradition of Abhidharma. In particular\, Nāgārjuna characterizes fun damental entities as completely ontologically independent of other entiti es whereas the Vaibhāṣika does not. In this essay I will clarify the Vaib hāṣika understanding of dependent origination and their notion of fundame ntality and demonstrate that Nāgārjuna's arguments do not establish the c laim that nothing is ultimately real. The Vaibhāṣika position is of philo sophical interest because it serves as an historical example of a view th at maintains that it is possible for fundamental entities to be ontologic al dependent. While machine learn ing and human language technologies hold tremendous potential to optimize healthcare processes and practices\, models trained on biased data incre ase the risk of perpetuating and amplifying existing health disparities. These issues may be exacerbated by Large Language Models (LLMs) which are known to encode harmful social biases and stereotypes with implications for algorithmic fairness.\n\nThis seminar\, presented by Silvio Amir\, Ph .D.\, Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Northeastern University\ , discusses the opportunities and challenges of using LLMs in healthcare contexts with a particular emphasis on the impacts on health disparities. For s ocial ontology\, as we usually think of it\, deals with questions about w hat (social) entities there are\, and what their natures are. But this pr esupposes a certain way of thinking about the language we use in discussi ng the social world-that it merely serves to pick out or describe feature s of the world we can investigate. Before we move forward with metaphysic al questions on this assumption\, I will argue\, we need to step back to ask questions about the functions of the relevant forms of language in hu man life. We can get help with this project from systemic functional ling uistics\, which begins from anthropological questions about the functions different aspects of language serve in human life. Beginning from unders tanding the functions of different forms of language about the social wor ld can help us avoid wasting time on irrelevant metaphysical questions\, and re-focus our attention on understanding how social terms of different kinds work--and how they can lead to both important new bureaucratic and theoretic enablements\, and sometimes to new and hidden forms of injusti ce. Her wor k came to a halt in 2006 with the completion of the Saemangeum seawall\, the world's longest man-made dyke and the first component of a massive la nd reclamation effort.\n\nTen years later\, Hwang moved to Gunsan and lea rned about the Saemangeum Citizens Ecological Group\, a local civic organ ization that has conducted ecological surveys in the estuary for over 20 years. Sura\, located in Gunsan\, North Jeolla province\, is the last rem aining tidal flat in the Saemangeum estuary. Hwang was surprised to disco ver the area is teeming with fauna and resumed work on her documentary\, chronicling the beauty of this endangered space.\nFrom the director\n\nTh is film is the story of citizens who do not yield to the violence of the government project and resist by the act of recording. This is also about the "memories" of people who cannot forget the beauty. The moment I hear d the story of a man who can't forget the group dance of the shorebirds\, the wonder\, the longing\, and sense of loss he must have felt overwhelm ed me. That's what drove me to make this film for 7 years. In this world where the beauty to remember is gradually disappearing\, we record today\ , believing in the power of memories and records.\n\n"This film is a love song sung by people who love the beautiful tidal flat. The ending credit s include the names of various living creatures in Sura\, such as Saunder s's gulls and little terns. Sura residents in the film include a mother b ird protecting her baby in the strong wind. The mother bird's love may be no different from that of our parents." - Kim Sun-ae\, The Korea Times\n Expert panel\n\nImmediately following the film screening\, an expert pane l will discuss the ecological impacts of large-scale development projects :\n\n Lindsay Addison\, Coastal Biologist\, NC Audubon Society\n Ji eun Cho\, Postdoctoral Associate\, APSI\n Margaret McKean\, Professor Emerita of Political Science\, Duke\n\nmoderated by Professor Hae-Young K im (Asian & Middle Eastern Studies\, Duke) DURATION:PT2H30M DTSTAMP:20240308T180241Z DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20240418T190000 LAST-MODIFIED:20240308T180241Z LOCATION;X-BEDEWORK-UID=18832edc-1b287efb-011b-2c15bf12-00000020:Richard W hite Lecture Hall\, Room 107 STATUS:CONFIRMED SUMMARY:Film Screening: "Sura: A Love Song" (2023 UID:CAL-8a0292fd-8d13410f-018e-1a872e19-00002117demobedework@mysite.edu URL:https://asianpacific.duke.edu/event/film-screening-sura-love-song-yun- hwang-2022/ X-BEDEWORK-ALIAS;X-BEDEWORK-PARAM-DISPLAYNAME=Main:/user/public-user/Utili ties/Main X-BEDEWORK-ALIAS;X-BEDEWORK-PARAM-DISPLAYNAME=Movie_Film:/user/public-user /Arts/Movie_Film X-BEDEWORK-ALIAS;X-BEDEWORK-PARAM-DISPLAYNAME=Panel_Seminar_Colloquium:/us er/public-user/Lectures_Conferences/Panel_Seminar_Colloquium X-BEDEWORK-ALIAS;X-BEDEWORK-PARAM-DISPLAYNAME=Asia focus:/user/public-user /Topic of Event Focused on a Country or Continent (if applicable)/Asia fo cus X-BEDEWORK-ALIAS;X-BEDEWORK-PARAM-DISPLAYNAME=Global:/user/public-user/Top ic of Event Focused on a Country or Continent (if applicable)/Global X-BEDEWORK-ALIAS;X-BEDEWORK-PARAM-DISPLAYNAME=Civic Engagement/Social Acti on:/user/public-user/Topics/Civic Engagement_Social Action X-BEDEWORK-ALIAS;X-BEDEWORK-PARAM-DISPLAYNAME=Diversity/Inclusion:/user/pu blic-user/Topics/Diversity_Inclusion X-BEDEWORK-ALIAS;X-BEDEWORK-PARAM-DISPLAYNAME=Ethics:/user/public-user/Top ics/Ethics X-BEDEWORK-ALIAS;X-BEDEWORK-PARAM-DISPLAYNAME=Human Rights:/user/public-us er/Topics/Human Rights X-BEDEWORK-ALIAS;X-BEDEWORK-PARAM-DISPLAYNAME=Humanities:/user/public-user /Topics/Humanities X-BEDEWORK-ALIAS;X-BEDEWORK-PARAM-DISPLAYNAME=Natural Sciences:/user/publi c-user/Topics/Natural Sciences X-BEDEWORK-ALIAS;X-BEDEWORK-PARAM-DISPLAYNAME=Social Sciences:/user/public -user/Topics/Social Sciences X-BEDEWORK-ALIAS;X-BEDEWORK-PARAM-DISPLAYNAME=Sustainability:/user/public- user/Topics/Sustainability X-BEDEWORK-ALIAS;X-BEDEWORK-PARAM-DISPLAYNAME=Politics:/user/public-user/T opics/Politics X-BEDEWORK-SPEAKER:Lindsay Addison (Audubon North Carolina)\, Jieun Cho (A PSI)\, Margaret McKean (Political Science)\; moderated by Hae-Young Kim ( AMES) X-BEDEWORK-IMAGE-X1:0 X-BEDEWORK-IMAGE-Y1:0 X-BEDEWORK-IMAGE-X2:1059 X-BEDEWORK-IMAGE-Y2:706 X-BEDEWORK-IMAGE-CROP-WIDTH:1059 X-BEDEWORK-IMAGE-CROP-HEIGHT:706 X-BEDEWORK-IMAGE-ALT-TEXT:Still images captured on a film strip showing pe ople recording and taking measurements in a field\; descriptive text (fil m title\, date\, time\, location\, screening sponsors) X-BEDEWORK-SUBMITTEDBY:rmk33 for Asian Pacific Studies Institute (APSI) (a grp_ArtsandSciences_AsianPacificStudiesInstitute) X-BEDEWORK-CS;X-BEDEWORK-PARAM-DESCRIPTION="/principals/users/agrp_Artsand Sciences_AsianandMiddleEasternStudies,":Asian &\;amp\;amp\; Middle Eas tern Studies (AMES) X-BEDEWORK-IMAGE:/public/Images/240418_Sura__DC_20240308060241PM.png X-BEDEWORK-THUMB-IMAGE:/public/Images/240418_Sura__DC_20240308060241PM-thu mb.png END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT CATEGORIES:Ethics CATEGORIES:Other CATEGORIES:Utilities CATEGORIES:Training CATEGORIES:Workshop/Short Course CATEGORIES:Research CATEGORIES:Main CONTACT;X-BEDEWORK-UID=00f1fcdb-0f068baf-010f-068baf83-00000004:None CREATED:20220207T141650Z DESCRIPTION:REGISTRATION: Click Here\n\nNOTE: Please register ahead of the event.
