DESCRIPTION:We were honored when Duke approached us about curating this ex
hibit. The history of the decoy is broad and deep. The story that we prim
arily wanted to tell is that of the transformation of the decoy as a util
itarian object to that of a work of art.\n\nThose who are drawn to decoys
are\, typically\, equally drawn by lure of the outdoors. Fishing\, hikin
g\, and just enjoying the beauty of a clear day can also be seen in the e
ye of a finely carved duck. If this inspires you\, you might be asking yo
urself\, "how can I learn more?" We are so glad that you did.\nMany of th
e decoys you have seen today will be offered for sale\, at auction\, in L
eland Little's Spring Sporting Art Auction on March 2\, 2023. We invite y
ou to come to our Hillsborough gallery and speak with our Sporting Art Di
rector\, Robbie Smith. Use our auction as a classroom to learn more - rea
d the catalogues\, learn about the carvers and how these ducks were used.
You might just be inspired to bring one home. Leland Little Auctions

DESCRIPTION:On display in the John Hope Franklin Center Gallery are drawin
g interventions by Renzo Ortega on Llanchama (or Yanchama). Llanchama is
a natural textile used by multiple indigenous communities of the Amazon.
Because of its origin\, it does not need to be waived\, it is considered
a "Gift" from mother nature\, and also a way to teach how to make textil
es in situated contexts. It is widely used in the production of material
culture. It comes directly from the great sapucaia inner bark (Lecythis P
isonis)\, that peels naturally due to its rapid growth in the forest. Lla
nchama is used as material for ritual garments\, blankets\, diapers (for
babies)\, baskets\, sifters\, nets\, etc.\n\nOrtega argues about this ser
ies of drawing Interventions on llanchama\, "The Patrimony series respond
s to the global evil of heritage destruction\, the physical destruction o
f objects from the past\, and the conceptual destruction of people's thou
ghts and cultural contributions in the present. These drawings are an act
of shaping and destroying. A sudden change is generated not by the weath
er or the erosion\; humanity is the one who killed history. Beyond the fo
rmal elements of drawing\, the physical process of these works creates an
imprint that resists and adapts to intentional manipulation. With these
works\, I create resistant traces\, physically and thoughtfully\, to foll
ow through on the projected path."\n\nThe exhibit will be open to January
16\, 2023 through May 18\, 2023.

DESCRIPTION:The discoveries of the coding principles of vision\, somatosen
sation\, olfaction\, gustation\, and audition are all landmark achievemen
ts. By contrast\, little is known about how the brain encodes information
from the internal organs to generate our visceral senses. This critical
missing piece of the puzzle prevents a complete understanding of how the
brain encodes sensory information to control behavior. \nMost internal se
nses are signaled to the brain by the vagus nerve\, which directly connec
ts the visceral organs to the brain. The vagus nerve then relays internal
signals to the NTS of the brainstem\, the first information-processing h
ub of bodily cues in the brain. Here we developed a novel in vivo two-pho
ton mouse brainstem calcium imaging platform. This system allowed us\, fo
r the first time\, to record the activities of thousands of NTS neurons w
ith single-cell resolution and to visualize the sensory map directly. Thi
s innovative approach opened a new chapter of viscerosensory biology and
enabled us to make a series of discoveries: (1) Diverse chemo- and mechan
osensory signals within the same organ are represented by overlapping NTS
neuronal populations\; (2) by contrast\, different internal organs are e
ncoded by distinct neuronal populations that form dedicated "labeled line
s"\, each of which comprises heterogeneous cell types\; (3) the brain cre
ates a point-to-point map to represent internal organs\, forming a "visce
ral homunculus" in the brainstem that arises from the salt-and-pepper rep
resentation in the vagal ganglia\; (4) the spatial map of organs depends
on local inhibition. When inhibition is blocked\, neurons representing sp
ecific organs become responsive to multiple organs\, and the brainstem ma
p is blurred. Our study provides the first systematic analysis of the cod
ing logic of visceral senses\, laying the foundation for future research
to understand interoceptive codes throughout the brain.

DESCRIPTION:LUNCH\nLunch will be served at 11:45 am.\n\nABSTRACT SUMMARY\n
In this talk\, I will tell the story of our work with some truly remarkab
le undergraduate students at Rutgers-Camden\, who despite many odds have
achieved success that is unprecedented for the Camden campus. I will disc
uss the various challenges that we faced and some ideas that have worked
very well (and some that have not) for us. We have been applying some of
these ideas in our work with high school students and students at other i
nstitutions.\n\nSPEAKER BIO\nDr. Rajiv Gandhi is a Professor of Computer
Science at Rutgers University-Camden. He also teaches part-time at the U
niversity of Pennsylvania. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science in 2
003 from the University of Maryland\, College Park. His research interest
s lie in the broad area of theoretical computer science. Specifically\, h
e is interested in approximation and randomized algorithms. He is a passi
onate educator who loves working with students with diverse backgrounds\,
helping them achieve their potential. He is the recipient of the 2022 SI
GACT Distinguished Service award\, and has also received several teaching
excellence awards. Since 2009\, he has also been working with high schoo
l students as part of the Program in Algorithmic and Combinatorial Thinki
ng (http://algorithmicthinking.org).

DESCRIPTION:The world around us displays an incredible array of shape. How
do complex biological shapes form\, how do they evolve\, and how does sh
ape impact on organism fitness? To answer these questions\, our research
combines genetics\, 3D imaging and computational modeling to reveal funda
mental rules that underpin the development of an organ that is essential
for our survival: the grass leaf. Grasses comprise of more than 70% of cr
op species\, and species like maize\, rice\, and wheat are solely respons
ible for directly providing more than 50% of global calories\, in additio
n to feeding many of our other food sources. Natural grasslands cover ~30
% of our land\, without grasses our world would look dramatically differe
nt. Despite their importance how they grow and how the grasses may have e
volved has remained a mystery. Our recent work has started to unlock this
and is finally enabling cross-species comparisons to uncover rules that
define how complex biological shapes arise.

DESCRIPTION:Postdoctoral Research Scientist\,The Field Museum of Natural H
istory and University of Chicago.\nAbstract: Animals go through a series
of predictable stages\, each with their own energetic constraints and str
essors\, throughout the course of an annual cycle. But how do animals cop
e or adjust their physiology during these periods and what are the conseq
uences for health and disease? My research program takes an integrated ap
proach towards understanding energetic-based trade-offs in flying vertebr
ates. The three questions I will aim to answer during my talk are\, (1) w
hat are the consequences of food unpredictability and workload on small p
asserine bird physiology\, (2) are seasonal energetic constraints drivers
of viral dynamics in fruit bats\, and (3) what are the health consequenc
es of viral exposure in fruit bats? In birds\, I demonstrate that food un
predictability and\, to a certain extent parental workload\, forces trade
-offs between short-term survival (fat gain) and future infection and fit
ness. In bats\, I find evidence that a combination of energetic demands (
e.g. lactation\, dry season) and reproduction (e.g. hormonal shifts) are
likely the ecological drivers of viral recrudescence. Additionally\, in b
ats\, there might be subtle morbidity effects associated with elevated nu
mbers of past viral exposures. By utilizing both field and laboratory-bas
ed studies to assess flying vertebrate physiological responses we can gai
n insight into how animals will cope with ecological stressors which is e
ssential in light of climate change and recent zoonotic spillover events.

DESCRIPTION:Part of the Rfun series. R and the Tidyverse are a data-first
coding language that enables reproducible workflows. This Introduction to
iteration and custom functions uses a case-study approach to iterating o
ver rows in a data frame using the {purrr} package. {purrr} is an effici
ent and easier alternative to writing FOR loops. Prerequisite: familiari
ty with Tidyverse and ggplot (See Rfun quickStart). This workshop will e
xplore efficient alternatives to for-loops by leveraging custom functions
and the purrr library functions\, e.g. map(). With these skills you can
organize data frames for iteration. For example\, when ingesting multip
le CSV files or multiple Excel worksheets. You will learn nesting techni
ques that foster iteration. You'll be able to organize data frames that
contain models\, and visualizations.

DESCRIPTION:"Modern Organic Reactions for Precise (Macro)molecular Synthes
is" \n\nSpeaker: Prof. Quentin Michaudel\, Texas A&M\n \nProgress in heal
thcare\, clean energy\, and sustainable materials is driven by the synthe
sis of molecules of ever-increasing complexity. Research in the Michaudel
group centers on the invention of polymerization methods that allow for
precise control over macromolecular architecture (i.e.\, monomer composit
ion\, molecular weight distribution\, stereochemistry) as a means to tail
or the properties\, function\, and recyclability of soft materials. In pa
rallel\, my group develops approaches to the functionalization of fine ch
emicals\, including bioactive and drug-like molecules. Our projects are g
rounded in fundamental mechanistic considerations with an aim to develop
synthetic tools applicable to small organic compounds and macromolecules
alike. This presentation will cover our recent work in SuFEx click reacti
ons\, stereoselective olefin metathesis\, and heterocyclic aryne chemistr
y. \n \n \nBio \nQuentin Michaudel grew up in La Rochelle\, France. He re
ceived his B.Sc. (2008) and M.Sc. (2010) from the École Normale Supérieur
e de Lyon. He earned his Ph.D. (2015) with Professor Phil S. Baran at The
Scripps Research Institute\, where he explored C-H functionalization met
hods and their applications to the synthesis of complex molecules. Quenti
n then accepted a postdoctoral position at Cornell University\, where he
developed photocontrolled polymerizations with Professor Brett P. Fors. I
n 2018\, Quentin started his independent career as an assistant professor
at Texas A&M University. His research group focuses on the development o
f synthetic methods and new organic materials. Quentin is the recipient o
f an NIH MIRA award (2020) and an NSF Career Award (2022). He was selecte
d for the 2022 ACS PMSE Young Investigator Award and the 2022 ACS Organic
Division Academic Young Investigator's Symposium. \n\nTo learn more abou

DESCRIPTION:Although biodiversity conservation and development are often r
egarded as having a trade-off relationship\, there are regions where they
have co-benefits\, where conservation through expanding protection and r
educing deforestation can not only benefit biodiversity but also reduce c
limate change's impacts on human society\, including health risks. Dr. Bi
nbin Li will introduce her work on how the high overlap between areas wit
h biodiversity challenges\, those experiencing increasing natural disaste
rs under climate change\, and those with high spill-over risks of zoonosi
s diseases indicate a more sustainable path of development for these regi
ons. This is the key to implementing a post-2020 global biodiversity fram
ework and mainstreaming biodiversity conservation.\n\nChina is one of the
most biodiverse countries and faces great challenges in balancing biodiv
ersity conservation and development. Dr. Li will introduce how recent env
ironmental policies have developed in China to protect biodiversity and t
heir consequences for local livelihoods and endangered species conservati
on. An interdisciplinary approach has been used to promote sustainable li
velihoods around protected areas to reduce human disturbances\, such as l
ivestock grazing\, while engaging local communities in conservation throu
gh incentives.\n\nLearn more about the event and read Dr. Li's bio at bit

DESCRIPTION:Topic:\n\nWhen randomized trials are not available\, causal ef
fects are often estimated from observational data. Therefore\, causal inf
erence from observational data can be viewed as an attempt to emulate a h
ypothetical randomized trial-the target trial-that would quantify the cau
sal effect of interest. Contrary to what is generally believed\, many wel
l-known failures of observational studies were the result of not adequate
ly emulating a target trial rather than limitations of the observational
data. This talk explains those methodological failures in non-technical l
anguage and describes several examples of how observational data can be u
sed when randomized trials do not exist.\n\nAbout our Speaker\n\nMiguel H
ernán uses health data and causal inference methods to learn what works.
As Director of the CAUSALab at Harvard\, he and his collaborators repurpo
se real-world data into scientific evidence for the prevention and treatm
ent of infectious diseases\, cancer\, cardiovascular disease\, and mental
illness. As the Kolokotrones Professor of Biostatistics and Epidemiology
\, he teaches at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and at the
Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology\, where he has me
ntored dozens of trainees and students. His free online course "Causal Di
agrams" and book "Causal Inference: What If"\, co-authored with James Rob
ins\, are widely used for the training of researchers. Miguel has receive
d many awards for his work\, including the Rousseeuw Prize for Statistics
\, the Rothman Epidemiology Prize\, and a MERIT award from the National I
nstitutes of Health. He is Fellow of the American Association for the Adv
ancement of Science and the American Statistical Association\, Associate
Editor of Annals of Internal Medicine\, Editor Emeritus of Epidemiology\,
and past Associate Editor of Biometrics\, American Journal of Epidemiolo
gy\, and Journal of the American Statistical Association. \n\nThis is a h

DESCRIPTION:Neuroinflammation driven by reactive glia and immune cell infi
