Romance Studies Dialogue Series

As of late, various scholarly studies and popular media outlets have given visibility to the contact between Asian and Latinx diasporas in the US. This lecture will give an overview of these intersections and the rise of Asian Latinx cultural production, with a focus on the work of Filipino American José Garcia Villa (1908-1997) and his writings in Spanish and Spanglish. The lecture will interrogate the limits of Latinidad and demonstrate that the transition from Spanish- to Englishlanguage literary production in the Philippines and the Filipino diaspora was not always so clear-cut.
