Christopher Breuer, MD, Director of the Center for Regenerative Medicine at Nationwide Children's Hospital, Nationwide Endowed Chair in Surgical Research, Director of Tissue Engineering in The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center's new Center for Regenerative Medicine and Cell Based Therapies

Tissue engineered vascular grafts hold promise for advancing the field of congenital heart surgery. By creating autologous tissue constructs using tissue engineering methods one can repair or replace tissues that are either diseased, damaged or congenitally malformed. Herein we will review the development and translation of the first tissue engineered designed specifically for this purpose. We will demonstrate how by combining mechanistic based studies with computational modeling can accelerate the process of rational design when performing bench to the bedside research. Finally, we will discuss the future direction of this work.
