Dr. Smith's clinical and research interest focuses on improving the quality of cancer care including end of life, treatment, and post-treatment survivorship and palliative care. Her research applies a health services approach to identifying psychosocial needs and leveraging technology in delivering behavioral health interventions to cancer patients, caregivers, and providers.

Dr. Smith is a member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) Survivorship Guidelines Panel, American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Survivorship Committee, and senior scientist member of the Duke Oncology Nursing Center of Excellence. As a social work researcher, She brings a unique blend of multidisciplinary experience and expertise to her clinical and research collaborations including an MSW and PhD in social work, clinical training in hospice and pediatric hematology/oncology, fellowships in health services research and cancer care quality, a prior career in technology and information systems, and a personal history as a two-time cancer survivor (which provides a unique perspective of the complexities of care from both the patient and healthcare provider perspectives).
