Thursday, August 13, 2020
5:30 pm - 6:30 pm
Wesley Hogan

While today's youth face daunting challenges - from persistent structural racism to rising inequality and the existential threat of climate change - they are also rising up to tackle these problems through collective action, collaboration, advocacy, and new ways of organizing. Wesley Hogan, author of the recent book "On the Freedom Side: How Five Decades of Youth Activists Have Remixed American History," has documented the work and amplified the voices of many of these youth, including Black Lives Matter advocates, people who are engaged in immigrant rights work, and water protectors at Standing Rock. Carrying forward the legacy of activists from the Civil Rights era like Ella Baker, this new generation of leaders, many of them women of color, are fighting for the ideals of pluralism and self-determination here in the US and globally. Join the Hart Leadership Program and POLIS for a conversation with Wesley Hogan, who directs Duke's Center for Documentary Studies, and three activists - all with roots in Duke and Sanford - as they share their experiences with activism and organizing.
