Dave Kleinschmidt, Rutgers
Cognitive, Auditory, and Neural Bases of Language & Speech (CANBLS)

The Cognitive, Auditory, and Neural Bases of Language and Speech (CANBLS) Research Group brings together researchers from Duke campus and medical school to explore in depth the many aspects that contribute to our unique ability to generate, and communicate via language and speech.

Dr. Kleinschmidt's research: Speech is a complex sensory signal which is highly structured and highly variable. Historically, two traditions have treated the relationship between structure and variability in opposite ways: the psycholinguistic tradition views variability as noise to be removed from the signal, while the sociolinguistic views (at least some) variability as carrying meaningful information about who is talking. I'll talk about a unifying theoretical perspective---perception as inference under uncertainty---and give a few examples of where this perspective can shed light on the role of variability in speech processing.
