Ciompi Quartet: "Lost and Found"

Marie Jaell
Saturday, February 16, 2019
8:00 pm - 9:30 pm

Would J.S. Bach be known to us if Mendelssohn had not discovered his scores? Would we know Mahler if he had not been championed by Bruno Walter and Leonard Bernstein? In this program, the Ciompi Quartet follows this tradition of rediscovery, playing works of nineteenth century composers Marie Jaëll - pianist, pedagogue, and friend of Franz Liszt - and Guillaume Lekeu. The North American premiere of Jaëll's recently discovered String Quartet is followed by a mix of well-known and little-known works: the Second Quartet of Saint-Saëns, along with movements from late-nineteenth century quartets by Debussy, Vincent D'Indy, and Lekeu. PROGRAM: Saint-Saëns: String Quartet No. 2 in G Major, op. 153; Marie Jaëll: String Quartet in G Minor; Vincent D'Indy, Guillaume Lekeu, and Claude Debussy: excerpts from string quartets
