Dr. Basu's discussion will include:

-The value of comparative effectiveness through real-world evidence

-The importance of identifying natural experiments occurring in the real-world to estimate causal effects

-The effect of heterogeneity and its importance on decision-making

Dr. Basu will highlight new methods to achieve these objectives using continuous instrumental variables and illustrate the application of these methods in assessing the impact of ICU transfers on patient mortality.

Dr. Anirban Basu's interests lie in revealing heterogeneity in clinical and economic outcomes in order to establish the value of individualized care. His work has focused on translating such information for public policy using innovative methods in comparative effectiveness and cost-effectiveness research. Dr. Basu is a faculty research fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research and Associate Editor for both Health Economics and the Journal of Health Economics.
