We perform the first simultaneous global QCD analysis of parton distributions and fragmentation functions (generically, quantum probability distributions) from a Monte Carlo analysis of high-energy lepton and hadron scattering data. Inclusion of semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering data reveals a strong suppression of the strange quark distribution at parton momentum fractions x ~ 0.01, in contrast with the ATLAS observation of enhanced strangeness at the LHC. The combined fit reveals significant correlations between the strange quark density and the strange-to-kaon fragmentation function needed to simultaneously describe kaon production in lepton-lepton and lepton-hadron scattering. The methodology developed here can be applied in future studies of multidimensional distributions, such as TMDs and GPDs.
