Saturday, April 01, 2023
9:00 am - 12:00 pm

The plant communities in North Carolina's Piedmont tell a story. Looking at the mix of plants in a location reveals information about soil, moisture and previous uses of the land. In this in-person and mostly outdoor series of classes with instructor Paul Cameron and teaching assistant Greg Price, meet some of the plant communities found in the N.C. Piedmont and learn how plant succession-the loosely predictable transitions that convert a site from bare soil to mature forest over time-can reveal ways to read the landscape to understand what has happened in the past and draw clues about what to expect in the future.

Each week will be held at one of five different green spaces in and around Durham. The first session meets in Doris Duke Center classroom at Duke Gardens; driving directions will be sent for other session locations.

This class is offered in partnership with Triangle Land Conservancy. Please purchase "Field Guide to the Piedmont" by Michael Godfrey before the first session.

Fee: $128; 20% discount for Gardens and TLC members with discount code. Class meets for five sessions on Saturdays, April 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Registration is at https://rsvp.duke.edu/g1nKqO.
