Multivalence: The Mass and its Music
This program explores the relationship between varying facets of the Mass. The term "Mass" simultaneously refers to the primary Eucharistic service of Western Christianity, its historic liturgical texts, and the musical settings of those texts-regardless of whether that music was intended for worship or concert performance. The first half of the program will feature a "pastiche Mass" comprised of musical settings from around the globe. The second half of the program will feature Beethoven's Mass in C Major, Op. 86, marking the 250th anniversary of the composer's birth. Commentary and a pre-concert lecture will be provided by Rev. Dr. Paul Westermeyer, a prolific author and scholar of sacred music and professor emeritus at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota.
This event is ticketed.
