Film Screening and Panel Discussion: Paywall: The Business of Scholarship

Paywall: The Business of Scholarship is a new documentary that explores the unmet need for open access to research and science. The film questions the rationale behind the highly profitable, $25.2-billion-a-year business model whereby academic publishers sell access to research that has largely been funded by taxpayers.

The film screening will be followed by a moderated discussion, featuring:

- Aria Chernik (Duke), Founder and Director, OSPRI (Open Source Pedagogy, Research + Innovation), and Lecturing Fellow in the Social Science Research Institute
- Jennifer Jenkins (Duke), Clinical Professor of Law and Director, Center for the Study of the Public Domain
- Charles Piot (Duke), Chair and Professor of Cultural Anthropology and African and African American Studies
- Elise Smith (NIEHS), Postdoctoral Fellow, National Institutes of Environmental Health Sciences

Moderated by Paolo Mangiafico, Scholarly Communications Strategist, Duke University Libraries.

Presented by Duke University Libraries, Duke University Science and Society, Advancing Scientific Integrity, Services and Training (ASIST), the Office of the Vice Provost for Interdisciplinary Studies, and the Office of the Vice Provost for the Arts-Duke Arts.

Free and open to the public.
