Join the Franklin Humanities Institute for its new Friday morning series, tgiFHI! tgiFHI gives Duke faculty in the humanities, interpretative social sciences and arts the opportunity to present on their current research to interlocutors in their fields. A light breakfast will be served at 9am.

About the presentation: Not just any old perseverance in the face of danger is brave. Among other things, it must be worthwhile. But must the goal that makes the persevering worthwhile be good? Cannot a bank robber, e.g., be brave? I shall try to explain why the goal in courage need not be good. Part of my explanation will rest on a critique of Jonathan Lear's otherwise interesting account in his Radical Hope: Ethics in the Face of Cultural Devastation (2006).

About the speaker: Gopal Sreenivasan is Crown University Professor in Ethics in the Department of Philosophy. His research interests are in moral and political philosophy. Within those fields, he is interested in many areas, including moral psychology and bioethics.
