Abstract:
A common approach in nonlinear systems analysis is to partition the system into two: it is assumed that one part is well behaved, or well known and the other is "troublesome". When one of these parts is linear and the other is a static nonlinear element there are multiple tools available for the analysis of such a system, but perhaps none more powerful than that using so-called Zames-Falb multipliers. Despite being developed in the late 1960s, an entirely systematic search for such multipliers is still not available and computation is still problematic. The appeal of the Zames-Falb approach is that many nonlinear systems of practical importance can be handled in its framework, including "traditional" control problems involving actuator constraints, but also types of neural network, and even optimization problems.
