Stereotype Threat: Worrying About Meeting Others' Low Expectations

Members of marginalized groups, who are often negatively stereotyped as less capable academically (or in some other way), have been shown to experience what is called "stereotype threat," a fear that they will confirm that stereotype, which can then actually lead to poorer performance, along with increased stress. We'll talk about this phenomenon, how people are experiencing it at Duke, and how we can work together to address it.
