CEE Seminar: Realistic Modeling and Simulation of Earthquakes, Soil, Structures and their Interaction

Presented will be an approach for realistic modeling and simulation of earthquakes, soil, structures and their interaction (ESSI). Of particular interest is handling of uncertainties in modeling and simulation of ESSI problems:
- Modeling, epistemic uncertainties that are introduced through simplifying
assumptions used in analysis models
- Parametric, aleatory uncertainties that originate from spatial variability
in material, uncertain material parameters, uncertain loads, etc.
Accounting for both sources of uncertainty in analysis is important for improving understanding of ESSI system behavior and for improving safety andeconomy of infrastructure objects. A computational system, the so called Real-ESSI Simulator, that can handle both uncertainties, will be presented as well. The Real-ESSI Simulator (http://real-essi.us) is a computational system for time domain, high performance, deterministic or probabilistic modeling and simulation of ESSI problems. The Real-ESSI Simulator system is used for design and for assessment of static and dynamic behavior of infrastructure objects, including buildings, bridges, dams, nuclear facilities, tunnels, etc. A number of examples will be used to illustrate presented developments.
