You've probably seen a lot of ads for products that are "smart" and allow you to control functions in your home or dorm room with your cell phone or other Internet-connected device. Those products are part of what is called the Internet of Things (IoT).

During 2017-2018, the Duke Digital Initiative (DDI) is exploring the opportunities and challenges of IoT and how this massive connectivity of devices might impact Duke inside and outside the classroom. As part of DDI's exploration, a variety of consumer-level IoT devices have been installed in the Technology Engagement Center (TEC) in the Telecommunications Building on Telecom Drive.

What does "consumer-level" mean? These are devices that anybody can buy, install, and use. Devices currently in the TEC include Phillips Hues light bulbs, Amazon Dots, Samsung smart outlets, a Netatmo weather station, and a Meccano robot. A motion-activated camera is also available for you to try. Other devices may become available in time for this event.

Want to see some of these devices in action? Talk to Duke staff who have experience with them? Try some of them out?

Come to this open house in the TEC and explore with us! No registration required; drop by when you have time. Light refreshments will be served.
