New Testament/ Judaic Studies Seminar Welcomes: Daniel Boyarin

The New Testament/ Judaic Studies Seminar is please to welcome Daniel Boyarin to Duke. Boyarin is the current holder of the Hermann P. and Sophia Taubman Professorship of Talmudic Culture in the Departments of Near Eastern Studies and Rhetoric at University of California at Berkeley, He is an affiliated Member Department of Women's Studies, a member of the core faculty in the minor in Gay and Lesbian Studies and of the graduate group in Ancient History and Mediterranean Archaeology, and the designated emphasis in Women, Sexuality, Gender Studies, as well as part of the core faculty of the Center for the Study of Sexual Culture. Among his many publications, Border Lines (2004) examines the early stages of the partition of Judaism and Christianity into two separate and distinct religions. Socrates and the Fat Rabbis (2009) explores the dialogic structure in Plato and the Babylonian Talmud. The Jewish Gospels: The Story of the Jewish Christ (2012) carries on the line of exploration begun in Border Lines, developing the argument that New Testament ideas can be found in long-standing Jewish traditions.

Dinner begins at 6PM in Gray 200, and then the seminar adjourns at 6:30pm for the lecture.
