Characterizing Multiple Valuation Systems in Neuropsychiatric Disorders

Brian M. Sweis is an M.D./Ph.D. trainee at the University of Minnesota's Medical Scientist Training Program in the Department of Neuroscience. His research focuses on the neurobiology of psychiatric disorders from a behavioral neuroeconomics perspective, interrogating the different ways in which the brain makes decisions and how those decisions go awry. His work takes a translational approach spanning mice, rats, and humans in both healthy and diseased states linking mechanisms of learning and memory to that of decision-making information processing. His recent work focused on understanding heterogeneous etiologies of addiction pathophysiology but is currently expanding this framework toward other psychiatric disorders that may have multifaceted, circuit-specific decision-making dysfunctions at their core.

Brian recently completed his Ph.D. in the summer of 2018 in the laboratories of David Redish and Mark Thomas and is currently completing his final years of medical school alongside his clinical research. He plans to work as a physician-scientist in an academic medicine setting with an emphasis on translational neuromodulation. Brian is originally from Chicago, IL where he attended college in his hometown at Loyola University.
