Darien is a member of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina and an affiliate of the Tuscarora Indian Nation. A 2020 Udall Scholar, she is president of Duke's Native American Student Association and a founding chapter member of Alpha Pi Omega sorority, the country's oldest Native American sorority.
