What Counts as Evidence: Literature and Data+
What is evidence in literature studies? While this question has been posed in a number of guises for as long as the study of literature has been an academic field, it has become newly contentious as the application of computational methodologies has gained wider traction in the humanities. In this talk, we will consider the types of claims that can be addressed with quantitative methods in the study of literature with a particular focus on premodern literature. In particular, we will consider how qualitative and quantitative approaches can help literary scholars approach conceptual and historical question at different scales of inquiry.
