Research on electoral clientelism in multi-party political systems has exploded over the past twenty years, but it has made progress in a rather lop-sided fashion. Most progress has been made in pinning down exactly how clientelism works-as a process of transactions-with different players and moves that are involved in constructing and sustaining the relationship between politicians (patrons) and clients (citizens, as voters). This conference explores clientelism and electoral linkage mechanisms, the political economy of informality, brokerage strategies and brokerage mechanisms. Please email Mateo Villamizar-Chaparro for attendance access.
