Walter Bockting, PhD, is Professor of Medical Psychology (in Psychiatry and Nursing) at Columbia University. He is Director of the Columbia Gender Identity Program and Co-Director of the Division of Gender, Sexuality, and Health, NYSPI/Columbia Psychiatry in New York City. A clinical psychologist, Dr. Bockting received his PhD from the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and completed a postdoctoral clinical/research fellowship at the Program in Human Sexuality, University of Minnesota Medical School. Dr. Bockting is internationally known for his expertise in transgender health. His research has been funded by NIDA, NICHD, and NIA, and he is the Principal Investigator of Project AFFIRM, a longitudinal, multisite study of transgender identity development across the lifespan. He is a fellow and past-president of the Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality, and a past-president of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health.
